Doomsday in 2012?

I was one of the lucky few that got to see the premier of 2012, 4 days before the world-wide release on Friday (13 Nov). Thanks to Tyng from Hot Magazine. Usually these movie premiers are quite empty but that hall in Cineleisure was packed! Was a hassle to go in too as we had to deposit our cameras outside before we were even allowed in.

We've seen the billboard advertisements, we've heard the warnings. 2012 was a doomsday prophecy that the world will come to an end on 21 December 2012, coinciding with the end of the Mayan calendar.

The movie is directed by Roland Emmerich, the same guy who brought us Independance Day and The Day After Tomorrow, so you kinda know what to expect - loads of explosions, destruction, awesome CGIs and basically, a whole load of action.

Critics might disagree but I will have to say that I enjoyed the movie very much. The plot is not new - end of days is coming, govn conspiracy to cover it up from the people, a nobody tries to save his family and triumphs against all odds - but the delivery was entertaining nonetheless. I was gripping my seat for the entire 158 minutes of the movie.

What I liked the most was how they focused on relationships between familes - a father and his son, a mother and her child - instead of those stupid love scenes they always HAVE to put (well they did eventually towards the end but thank god it was a minor irrelevance). The most touching one was of the father calmly saying goodbye to his family as the giant tsunami heads towards them in India.

And I absolutely LOVE John Cusack. There's something about his geekiness that's SO attractive.

District 9 vs 798

We were supposed to watch District 9 two night before but due to unfolding events, that didn’t happen. Finally made it at Tropicana City coz the GSC there is newer, wanted to check out the place. Smells nicer anyway.

Maybe it’s just me but I thought the movie wasn’t that great. Don’t get what all the hype is about. Aliens living amongst people? Story line.. errr.. My date fell asleep in the cinema. That says a lot huh? Oh well, see for yourself and let me know what you think bout the movie.

Went over to 798, the wine bar at Tropicana City and I can say I enjoyed that much better. Ambience is nice, place is spacious and doesn’t stink of cigarette smoke cause it’s outdoors and wines are reasonable. House pouring bottles from Chile & Australia go for RM75. Not too bad.

Creepy Orphan

It was the night before I fly off to Sri Lanka and I haven’t packed a single thing! But decided to procrastinate again and see Orphan, thanks to Tyng who got us premier tickets. I’m not too fond of horror shows but I thought what the heck. Not like I’m doing anything Friday too.

Orphan was really not what I expected it to be. It’s about a family who adopts a 9 year old girl and things just don’t seem to go right anymore. The story line’s good at the end. Had an interesting twist to it. I won’t spoil it for those who want to watch it.

It’s more of a disturbing, creepy movie than a horror show. I’m still confused about it. Not sure if I liked it or not as I went away with an uneasy feeling. Oh well, like my wife always say, a piece is good if it made an impact, be it a good or bad one. This show certainly had an impact on everyone I think. Creeepieeee…

Had a hard time finding my car in Mid V parking after that. Tu la.. rush some more.. had to go my parents house & drop of stuff some more..By the time I got back it was already 1am. And I still haven’t packed! Taxi’s coming at 3.30am. Fucked the sleep. I stayed up. Paid the price the next day.

Kidnapping a Subway

Went to watch Taking of Pelham 123 starring Denzel Washington & John Travolta, both veteran actors whose work I admire a lot. It's about Ryder (Travolta) who hijacked a subway train in NYC and demand 10m from the mayor to pay off the hostages. Denzel happenned to pick up the phone when Travolta called control station.

Both actors are slightly unrecognizable (both Denzel & Travolta put on a lot of weight and they really look old). I thought the show was not too bad as the plot was quite good, and the actors did a great job, but some said it was rubbish so I'll leave you to be the judge of that.

Of Wondermilk, 3D movies, art galleries, Nudes & pizzas

Busy busy Sunday. Su & Farsh came to pick me up for lunch and we headed to this little cafe called Wondermilk in Uptown. They are known for their innovative cupcakes but it wasn’t the cuppas that attracted me. It was the amount of ol’skool goodies that were there! Things I grew up on like chewing gum with that water tattoo thingy, gummy balls, paper dolls, yoyos, styrofoam aeroplanes, etc etc. Damn trippy the place layan.... Byron & Joel was supposed to join us back but Carolynn came instead. Poor girl had to work on a Sunday.

Went over to watch Ice Age 3 in 3D next. Tix were RM16 cause there was a RM5 rental for the 3D glasses. Was a cool experience but storyline not that great la - was hoping for more 3D stuff being thrown at the audience so we could dodge them :P but tak banyak lo...

We still had time before the NUDE event at Tamarind so decided to head over to the National Art Gallery for some culture. There’s a Mosaics of Malaysia exhibition by artist Zhang Zhou which was pretty awesome.

After the gallery closed, we drove to Tamarind Springs in Ampang. Azim & Rezuan joined us for the event. Programme said Antares will perform at 6.30pm but the event didn’t start until 8pm! That’s Malaysian time for you. The Orang Asli Temuan tribe performed with their bamboo percussions and so did Justin Lim. Lucky we came early else we wouldn’t have had a table near the area.

The best part of the night was this professional pole dancer who did amzing shit with her body. Damn is she strong! No sleazy shit, just pure skills. Wished I could do HALF of what she can I’ll be one happy ma f*$ker.

Vic was supposed to spin at 10pm but since the programme got pushed back, and DJ Haze was just into his 1st hour, we decided to go off earlier. Stopped by Yellow Cab in Ampang for some pizza (Azim had been craving it the whole night). Was worth the stop man. Awesome fresh ingredients! None of those mass produced shit. This the real thing. If Azim says its good, you take heed of the Chef’s advice. Love their cute yellow Vespa scooters too :)

It’s my wifey’s birthday today! But her boss was taking her out for lunch so had lunch with Max & Farah instead as it was Max’s last day at The Star.

Went for movie at night. Thanks to Tyng for the premier tickets of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner. It’s a chick flick about this playboy who was visited by his revered playboy Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas!) who told him that 3 ghosts (past, present & future gfs) will show him how his life will turn out to be if he continue with his loveless playboy ways.

Wouldn’t buy a ticket for it. Would maybe watch the DVD. Not worth going to cinema for this unless you’re a major McConaughey fan (damn that guy’s gorgeous). Part where he destroys the wedding cake was hilarious.

Went to Azim’s place to smoke some shisha before heading back home.

Dearly Departed

I was a bit hesitant when I heard about the invite for the premier of Departures. No 1, I am NOT a Japanese film fan. No 2, I'm not too big on indie films either. But the media preview was to be held at GSC Signature @ The Gardens. I've never been there so curiousity got the better of me.

The cinema was nice! Very classy and sophisticated. They had 2 floors, the ground led to Gold Class and the upper floor, the signature halls. There are cafes and waiting lounges. Tickets are more expensive here too, cheapest being RM15 each.











A few pics of what it looks like. It's all couple seats with plenty of room and a side table where you can put your popcorn & stuff. The seats recline too! Invited my sis & brother along for the show.

The show is about a cellist who lost his job and moved back to his hometown. Desperate, he went for an interview which advertised that the person is required to work with departures. It was actually a misprint (most likely intended) for departed.

The story is about the struggles and stigma he faced, even from his own wife, for taking up the job. It's a very Yasmin Ahmad kind of film (she was in the house too!) where the director aims to portray a taboo topic in a new light. The message conveyed was that it was a very admirable job as the person brings peace to the family of the departed.

It's a touching drama. With comedy thrown in for laughs. Definately NOT for action & CGI junkies. Go watch it if you like a good story line. I know I, my sis & even my 19-year old brother did.

Did nothing much on a lazy Sunday except that I managed a swim in the morning! Brrr was the water cold. Went for a HUGE bak kut teh lunch at this place in Kelana Jaya (near the LRT station) that we chanced upon. So regretted it later. BKT was good but urgh, were we full. Spent the rest of the day writing my feng shui article.

Wanted to catch Terminator Salvation so went to Cineleisure but unfortunately, all the tickets were sold out by the time we got there. Headed to One U and managed to get the 11.30pm show. Played some games at the arcade before the show. Enjoyed this silly Japanese Bashi bashi (or sumthing like that) the most.

Terminator Salvation was not what I expected. It was just so-so only lo... had a few boring & confusing parts here & there. Thought Sam Worthington did a better job as Marcus Wright than Christian Bale as John Connor. Oh well, at least the special effects were good.
